There are several welding processes that are utilized to facilitate the joining of metals. Certain welding jobs will benefit more from one process than another. Most welders in the field doing pipeline welding jobs, employ the gas tungsten arc welding and the shielded metal-arc welding processes.

Partaking in pipeline welding jobs mean that you are aware of the pipe welding positions. You will only be allowed to weld in the positions, and to the specifications in which you are certified to weld. The way the pipe is laid out for welding, is what is meant by pipe welding positions. The positions are 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G. The G after the number means a groove weld (mostly used to make edge to edge joints).

Starting with the most complex position, the 6G position entails having the pipe placed at an angle, which is usually at forty five degrees. The pipe doesn't move during a 6G welding operation. The 5G pipe welding position has the pipe fixed (doesn't move or rotate during welding operation) horizontally. In the 2G pipe welding position, the pipe is vertically placed, and it is also fixed so it doesn't move during the welding process. Lastly, the 1G pipe welding position has the pipe horizontal and rolled. It is like the 5G position except that the pipe isn't fixed.

With regard to wages or salaries in pipeline welding jobs, being certified in the 6G position will yield maximum returns. Yes, there is more money to be made than if you had a certificate in the other pipe welding positions only, such as 5G for example.
